Visiting Canterbury

Heritage, history, culture, entertainment, festivals, shopping – Canterbury has it all!

Canterbury is a city where the present sits comfortably alongside the past. Where history and heritage quench the thirst for knowledge, street cafés and fine restaurants feed the appetite and a thriving arts community satisfies the imagination.

Canterbury’s unique appeal is the magnificent Canterbury Cathedral and the tranquil ruins of St Augustine’s Abbey just outside the city walls. Along with the ancient St Martin’s Church these form one of Britain’s handful of world Heritage Sites. Chaucer’s famous pilgrims ended their journey here, as told in the Canterbury Tales visitor attraction, a recreation of medieval England, including smells and sounds. Our museums tell the amazing story of famous people and great events from Roman times to Rupert Bear. City walking tours and River tours offer a wonderful insight into Canterbury’s finest architecture, history and beautiful natural scenery. The Ghost Tours give a quirkier slant to Canterbury’s history.

Possibly one of the best times to visit Canterbury is in October, when the Canterbury Festival, also known as Kent’s International Arts Festival is held. Featuring classical and modern music, theatre, dance, exhibitions and family events, the festival has something to offer everyone.

Shopaholics will enjoy visiting the many independent shops in the King’s Mile or major retail outlets in the high street or Whitefriars shopping centre. Whatever your taste, you’ll find a mouth-watering choice of food and drink in Canterbury. The Goods Shed, Canterbury’s daily farmers’ market offers a wonderful range of local and mostly organic produce, as well as a superb restaurant.
